The homeowner contacted Dayspring Restoration due to concerns regarding unresolved water damage and suspect microbial growth in the attic following a recent roof leak. Although previous remediation had been attempted by another contractor, independent hygienist testing revealed elevated surface sample counts on structural framing, raising concern that dormant mold spores and contaminated blown-in insulation remained unaddressed.
To ensure total eradication of the microbial issue according to IICRC S520 standards, we developed an attic mold remediation and insulation abatement strategy. Our remediation technicians utilized full personal protective equipment (PPE)—including full-face respirators—and erected poly containment zones under continuous negative air pressure powered by HEPA air filtration devices (AFDs) to prevent cross-contamination into the living spaces and garage below. To eliminate hidden reservoir pockets, all blown-in loose-fill attic insulation was extracted using commercial insulation removal machines, bagged airtight, and transported off-site for disposal. Our crew then conducted detailed HEPA vacuuming across all structural trusses, rafter bays, and tongue-and-groove roof sheathing boards. Technicians performed mechanical abrasive sanding on stained framing members followed by a comprehensive wet-wiping treatment with an EPA-registered antimicrobial solution to sanitize all exposed wood surfaces. Upon completing final surface cleaning and debris removal, the homeowner was advised on protocol to schedule post-remediation clearance testing with an independent industrial hygienist.
